This week's inspiration

A new magazine came out this week called Green Craft Magazine. It is filled with pictures and ideas for eco-art. There are so many things that can be recycled into beautiful art work, jewelry, clothing, home deco - using everything from coffee filters to old metal hinges. Even a shopping bag made with recycled plastic grocery bags! It inspired me. There are some great jewelry pieces made from aluminum cans and used plastic gift cards. The artists are Jenni Stultz and Jennifer Nash. Both of these women make some awesome jewelry that is very clever and unusual.

I learned a new term - "upcycled" instead of "recycled". I like it! Taking an item (like a used gift card) and turning it into something better than it's original purpose. This green art is en entirely new art form and it is getting bigger all the time. Jeff and I are both experimenting with making upcycled art and this magazine just added fuel to the creative fire. I think I am going to take some plastic grocery bags and make something . . . .

Sew Krazy Fabric Sale

The great little fabric shop I found a few weeks ago - Sew Krazy- is going out of business. Everything is 50% off. I am sad but couldn't resist buying some fabric. No Amy Butler fabric, but I found some good ones! What am I going to do with it?? Um . . . put it with it's new friends waiting in the sewing room:).

On the way home we passed this beautiful vintage home with a outstanding yellow door. I had to take a pic. It looks like a summer house! You just know the people who live there enjoy life!

It sure is quiet around here . . .

After nearly three weeks of giggles, jumping, swimming, crying, laughing, family meals, knock-knock jokes and bedtime stories Elisha and the girls headed back to Nashville to get ready to move into their new home. It sure is quiet around here! It is amazing the joy and "life" they bring into our life. We miss them already! We had such a good time together.

A couple of days before they left I asked Zoe if she would like to paint a picture to hang in her new room- she said "yes", of course. She loves to make art. We sat down together, I showed her the canvas, we talked about a design concept and I gave her some paper and pencils to create a design.

She sat at the dining room table and started drawing. She gave it lots of thought and attention and after several drafts came up with a design she really liked.

Next, I sketched her design onto the canvas, set up the easel, paints and brushes and let her go (with a bit of supervision). She did an awesome job. The hardest part for her was waiting for the paint to dry between colors.

Once the design was painted we stood back and looked at it and she said "I know what it needs, dots and stars". So we busted out the gold paint and she get busy! Here is her final creation. She is quite the artist! And just 5 years old. I know she will love having this in her room.

Fiesta . . .the colors in my future!

Restrant . . . hard to resist checking out a few garage sales this weekend. It was a gloriously beautiful summer weekend with blue skies, white puffy clouds and temps in the 70's. Perfect for garage sailing!

Okay, I know I just cleaned out my garage and basement and I did make a commitment to Elisha that I wouldn't buy any more furniture - but I have treasure hunting in my blood! So off I went . . .

Rewind . . . at Hartville on Thursday I checked out a booth selling repro Fiestaware and realized how much I love it. I used to be a snob about it - remembering my grandmother's old Fiestaware and rejecting the "new". But I've gotten over that. Seeing it sparked something and it began to stir - I could feel the collector in me start to come to life - but I walked away.

Fast forward . . . . on Saturday we found a street sale (love those) and there was tons of great stuff. At the second house we went to the only thing she had on her table was Fiestaware and tons of it! She had plates, bowls, mugs, serving dishes, all kinds of shapes and sizes and she even had Fiesta flatware! (And the prices were cheap!) I was feeling a bit stunned, thinking the Universe was trying to tell me something. First I negotiated a great price for the flatware and then picked out a couple of dishes - great chartreuse color. As I was deciding what to pick next a woman walked up and before I could do anything she had bought nearly all the good pieces. Panic! At that moment I realized the collector in me was alive and really peeved! As I look back on it, I still regret not just offering her $100 bucks for the lot when I first walked up, but I now know that I am a Fiestaware collector and that won't ever happen to me again!!

The good news! I did get away with two pieces a plate and bowl (the chartreuse was retired in 1999!) and flatware service for 8 in some really wonderful colors. Also found two packages of vintage MOD looking decals in vibrant colors at another sale. This look is the beginning of my new Urban Cottage vision for our new home in Nashville. A mixture of cottage, modern and retro (the concept is evolving). It will all go into a box marked Inspiration and I will continue the hunt! Now I have an excuse to garage sale and hit the flea markets! ALERT: If you see any Fiestaware out there , give me a call!

Hartville Flea Market

Up at 5am sending Jeff and Elisha off to Hartville Flea Market to sell our bounty from purging the garage and basement. I met them out there at a more decent hour to shop and cruse the flea market with the girls (Zoe and Bella, my granddaughters and Jennifer, my niece). The weather was a little ominous so the crowd was thin, but it was Hartville - it never disappoints! I found a few goodies - some fabric and a desk chair. But the best part of the day was getting rid of all the junk from our house. Elisha and Jeff are experienced sellers and set up a great space (Elisha's touch) and sold their hearts out.

Another wonderful thing about Hartville is the farmer's market. Beautiful locally grown food from area farmers and Amish families. I couldn't resist taking some pics of the great produce.

We had a fun morning, exploring the market, eating breakfast at the Hartville Kitchen, but the girls got a little bored and it was time to go. When Bella made this face I thought she had reached her looking at "old junk" tolerance level! So we headed for home.

At the end of the day, most all the stuff was sold, what was left over was given away and Jeff brought home two nearly new tires (for my Vue) and a lawn mower. Both things we needed and were about to buy. So it worked out so well. We basically traded our purged stuff for things that we really needed and still came out with some cash! That is a new form of recycling!

Clearing Space for Change

Elisha (my daughter) is the queen of organizing. Since she is here visiting I asked her to help us purge and organize the garage and basement. If we want to move we need to get energy moving in that direction. I surrendered to her method and wisdom and just followed directions. (Well, most of the time:) She is good! It took us two days of hard labor, but it is amazing what got done. The garage is completely in order with designated areas, the basement has been redesigned and purged, even the tool room is ship shape.

We also went through and organized 6 boxes of family pictures and memoribilia that I have been trying to get to for years (maybe decades!) This girl should have a show on HGTV!

We have a huge pile of stuff to get rid of so we decided on a trip to the Hartville Flea Market on Thursday to sell it. Yipeeee an adventure - I just have to hold back from buying anything. Oh temptation!

Now the energy is all stirred up and junk has been cleared I know we are ready to sell this house and get on the road to Nashville!

Thanks Elisha for your guidance and amazing skill. You are the queen!
